Domestic Flights in Indonesia With Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, and Birds

Book the pet route before you book your own seat. In Indonesia, the hard part is not only the carrier. It is whether the airport, airline, species, paperwork, and heat plan all agree with each other.

Use this as an editorial planning guide, and ask your vet whether your individual pet is fit to fly.

Start with the route, not the ticket

A pet-friendly-looking itinerary can still fail at the airport. One Indonesia-focused travel guide says Denpasar/Bali does not accept pet arrivals or departures, and points owners toward Jakarta, Surabaya, or Medan for entry or relocation planning.

That matters even for domestic planning. If your dog is moving from Jakarta to Bali, or your cat is connecting through Bali, do not assume “there is a flight” means “there is a pet movement option.” Ask the airline and the airport-side handler before payment.

Planning questionWhat to confirm before booking
Does this airport accept pet movements?Do not assume. Check the origin, destination, and any transit airport.
Does this airline accept this species?Dogs and cats are not the same planning case as rabbits or birds.
Is the journey domestic, cross-border, or mixed?Paperwork can change when Singapore or another country is part of the route.
Is the pet travelling as checked baggage, cargo, or another live-animal service?Follow the airline’s category, not your preference.

The order is boring but useful: airport first, airline second, paperwork third, carrier fourth. If any one part fails, the whole plan changes.

A four-step visual flow shows route, airline, paperwork, and carrier checks for pet travel planning.
A pet flight plan works only when every step matches.

Species acceptance is not the same for every pet

Cats and dogs have the clearest published examples in this source bundle. Rabbits have partial airline and Singapore small-mammal guidance. Birds are the least clear here, so bird owners should not reuse a cat checklist and hope.

EVA Air’s Indonesia page gives a useful species example: accompanied pets accepted as checked baggage are dogs, cats, and rabbits only, and pets are not accepted in the cabin except service dogs. That does not settle every Indonesian domestic route. It does show why species acceptance must be checked airline by airline.

RabbitEVA Air lists rabbits as checked-baggage pets. Singapore AVS treats rabbits as small mammals.Whether the chosen Indonesian domestic airline accepts rabbits.

For cats and dogs entering Indonesia, one commercial pet-travel source says the file commonly includes proof of microchip, rabies vaccination, rabies titer test, licences, and a veterinary health certificate. The same source says owners of birds, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and other animals should check the separate “other pet animals” requirements instead of copying the dog-and-cat list.

That is the seam. We used to see owners treat “pet travel paperwork” as one checklist. For Indonesia planning, split it by species and journey type.

The carrier follows airline rules

A cute carrier is not the goal. A compliant carrier is.

Singapore AVS transshipment guidance says all animals must travel in an IATA-approved crate or carrier. If your pet is transiting Singapore by air, AVS says the dog or cat will be kept in the airline’s animal holding area before loading onto the connecting flight.

Use that as a planning habit even when your trip is inside Indonesia: ask for the airline’s current carrier rule in writing. Then measure the carrier, label it clearly, and confirm whether the pet travels in the hold, cargo, or another live-animal process.

Air France’s Indonesia page gives one concrete example for cats and dogs: if the animal plus carrier weighs more than 8 kg and up to 75 kg, it must travel in the hold. The same page says the pet must be added to the booking no later than 24 hours before departure.

Heat planning is part of the route

Pets wait in shaded carriers while staff manage heat exposure before a domestic flight.
Heat planning is part of the route, especially for young, senior, flat-faced, or long-haired pets.

Indonesia’s heat is not a minor comfort issue for every pet. One Indonesia pet guide notes that pug-nosed breeds and long-haired dogs and cats may have more trouble adjusting to tropical heat than shorter-haired pets.

Singapore AVS import guidance also warns that air travel has inherent risks for small breeds or young dogs, including heat stress. That supports a careful conversation before flying a French Bulldog puppy, a Persian cat, a very young dog, a senior pet, or a pet with known medical issues.

Keep the heat plan practical. Choose routing that reduces waiting. Ask where the pet waits before loading. Avoid adding a transit stop unless the airline or airport requires it. Have a backup plan if the handler says live-animal movement is not available on that flight.

Do not invent a temperature cut-off. This bundle does not include an Indonesian airline or cargo-handler heat-index threshold. Ask the airline what rule it uses on the day of travel.

Pack food with the border in mind

Food can become paperwork when the trip touches Singapore or another border. Singapore AVS says hand-carried dog, cat, small mammal, bird, and fish feed from all countries is allowed only when it does not contain meat ingredients.

AVS also gives traveller allowance quantities for pet food that does not contain meat and is for the traveller’s pet: dry pet food up to 20 kg per person and wet pet food up to 5 kg per person.

For a purely domestic Indonesia flight, your airline may have different baggage handling rules. For any Singapore-connected leg, pack with those AVS limits in mind and keep the label visible.

The small thing to do tonight: write your pet’s route on one page, then fill four boxes beside it: airport accepts pets, airline accepts the species, paperwork matches the journey, and the carrier matches the airline rule.
